Colin Schmitt on the issues important to his campaign

Colin Schmitt highlights plans to preserve our communities against KJ's unchecked growth

New Windsor, NY -- (10/24/18) Colin Schmitt, candidate for the 99th Assembly District, has a long record of standing up for our communities, especially when it comes to the unchecked growth of Kiryas Joel.  That is why leading community organizations like Preserve Blooming Grove, Preserve Chester and United Hudson Valley have endorsed him.

Colin Schmitt stated, “I believe that everyone deserves equal treatment. I will put an end to the special treatment bloc voting interests receive and I will stop the unchecked expansion of high density development in our communities.”

In the State Assembly, Colin will fight systemic welfare abuse, defend our natural resources and oppose KJ’s continued expansion. Colin’s plan's include:

State Agency Oversight: Use the Assembly’s oversight authority to compel the Governor and state agencies to enforce existing laws and safeguards against overdevelopment and the exploitation of natural resources. Ensuring that the Governor does not use state agencies as political pawns any longer.

Stop the Blockbusting: Stop unscrupulous block-busting practices designed to intimidate homeowners into selling their homes.

  • In the State Assembly I would work to ensure the entirety of Orange and Rockland Counties are designated “cease and desist” areas under existing state law. This is something that I have advocated for as a private citizen for several years. Once designated as such, homeowners in designated areas would be protected from blockbusting activities. Brokers and agents would be barred from calling, mailing, or soliciting homeowners listed in the designated zones. Those who failed to comply would face significant fines and penalties.
  • In the State Assembly I would support increased civil financial penalties and fines for those engaging in blockbusting activities. Those guilty of such behavior should face double the federal penalty on the state level and at least a five year ban from engaging in any real estate related activity in the entire state.

Land Preservation: Using the successful Warwick model of PDR to preserve land and open space that I successfully worked on while on staff for then-Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt I will work with local communities, including Chester who tried last legislative session to implement such a program, to ensure we protect our land in the 99th Assembly District.

Combating Welfare Fraud and Abuse: Loopholes exist that allow the exploitation of welfare programs. Law enforcement would be able to prosecute those who take advantage of the system if they were closed. I will work with local prosecutors to close these loopholes and hold accountable anyone who seeks to enrich themselves through welfare programs at the expense of taxpayers.

Colin Schmitt is committed to public service.  Colin is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and chief-of-staff for New Windsor’s town government.  Previously, Colin served as Director of Operations for the NYS Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs.  Colin and his wife, Nikki, live in the Town of New Windsor.
