NEW WINDSOR, NY — The National Republican Congressional Committee, today, named New York State Assemblyman and candidate for New York’s 18th Congressional District, Colin Schmitt (R-New Windsor) to its Young Guns program for house candidates who have established a strong path to victory this Election Day. This follows Assemblyman Schmitt’s designation to the initial list of ‘On the Radar’ candidates highlighting NY-18 as a top race in the country.

The newly redrawn NY-18 district is an open seat, following news of incumbent Sean Maloney switching districts.

To qualify for full Young Guns status, candidates must achieve specific benchmarks in their fundraising, messaging, and collaboration with the NRCC. In 2020, 25 Young Guns were elected to Congress and since the program’s inception, more than 150 members were elected.

“With just 175 days until the midterm elections, it’s clear a red wave is coming. We have the energy, the message, and the candidates to win big at the ballot box,” said Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy. “Today, I’m proud to announce the latest round of Young Gun candidates. These six individuals have proven they have the work ethic and discipline necessary to run effective campaigns and I look forward to working with them in our pursuit to Take Back the House. November 8th is our opportunity to fight back, and we need all hands on deck because we can’t afford to lose.”

“I am so honored to be selected as an official full member of the NRCC’s Young Guns program,” said Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt. “My Young Gun Designation shows, following the new redistricting map, the significant momentum we have towards victory. Hudson Valley residents are tired of one-party control in Washington that is causing skyrocketing inflation, unaffordable gas prices, shortages of baby formula, and failed policies making our communities less safe and leaving our borders unsecured. We will win in November and restore representation for our Hudson Valley values in Washington. I thank NRCC for recognizing our campaign as one of the top races in the country to take back the House.”

The new NY-18 congressional district encompasses all of Orange County and parts of Dutchess and Ulster Counties.

Colin Schmitt is committed to public service. Colin is a Sergeant in the Army National Guard and Assemblyman for the 99th NYS Assembly District which includes parts of Orange and Rockland counties. Colin and his wife, Nikki, live in the Town of New Windsor with their rescue dog Quincy. On April 6, 2021, Colin announced his campaign for New York’s 18th Congressional District. As a lifelong Hudson Valley resident, Colin will stand up for local families and their values in the U.S. House of Representatives by fighting for lower taxes and more jobs and defending the region’s wonderful quality of life.
