NY-18 CANDIDATE AND ASSEMBLYMAN COLIN SCHMITT TOURS US-MEXICO BORDER WITH CONGRESSMAN TONY GONZALES (TX-23)

Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt tours the US-Mexico border with Congressman Tony Gonzales amidst record-high illegal crossings and deadly fentanyl poison trafficked across the US, into Hudson Valley

EL PASO, TX — New York State Assemblyman and candidate for New York’s 18th Congressional District, Colin Schmitt (R-New Windsor), joined with Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) to tour the US-Mexico border in El Paso, TX this past week. During the tour, Assemblyman Schmitt focused on the national security and humanitarian issues ongoing at the border that impacts the Hudson Valley due to the ongoing fentanyl crisis and the migrant flights being flown into Stewart International Airport and Westchester County Airport.

This follows a trip Assemblyman Schmitt took in the summer of 2019, where he traveled to the US-Mexico Border and met with federal immigration officials, local law enforcement, and humanitarian workers to discuss border security and the humanitarian impact of the illegal immigration crisis.  Following the trip, Schmitt issued a report on his findings (link to report).

Both trips were privately funded, with no tax dollars utilized.

Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt stated, “We have an ongoing national security and humanitarian crisis at our border. We need serious leadership in Washington, DC to turn the border situation around and regain control. Policy missteps from the Biden administration have exported this crisis to our own communities.”

Schmitt continued, “Despite some excellent technology advances driven by the private sector, illegal entries into our country are at historic numbers and the amount of fentanyl and other poison drugs continues to increase. Failed border security policies and the halting of all new physical barrier construction have made it very difficult to stop the surge of fentanyl into our communities. We are facing historic numbers of deaths and no means for local police to stop the surge coming from across the border. We also see detained migrants being flown into Stewart International Airport and Westchester County Airport in the dead of night. We can make things better, with an all of the above approach supporting federal law enforcement, hardening the border with physical barriers and advanced technologies and addressing the pull-factors driving illegal immigration that I documented in my 2019 report.”

Schmitt concluded, “While I will be a leader in Congress to secure our borders and combat the illegal immigration crisis, as Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan has fueled the pull-factors driving it by making Ulster a sanctuary county. With illegal entries and the flow of fentanyl at historic highs, this is an issue that’s affecting every one of our communities.”

Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) stated, “My team and I have successfully hosted our 14th border visit. We have now hosted 74 members of Congress and 10 future members of Congress. When Republicans take back the House we will be ready on day one to make meaningful policy changes. Colin Schmitt is part of that change and it was a privilege having him at the border.”

The new NY-18 congressional district encompasses all of Orange County and parts of Dutchess and Ulster counties. Colin Schmitt is committed to public service. Colin is a Sergeant in the Army National Guard and Assemblyman for the 99th NYS Assembly District which includes parts of Orange and Rockland counties. Colin and his wife, Nikki, live in the Town of New Windsor with their rescue dog Quincy. On April 6, 2021, Colin announced his campaign for New York’s 18th Congressional District. As a lifelong Hudson Valley resident, Colin will stand up for local families and their values in the U.S. House of Representatives by fighting for lower taxes and more jobs and defending the region’s wonderful quality of life.
